Quarterly Game Development Updates
Our Creative Director, Matthew Grau takes us on a deep dive for the most recent quarter, sharing the inside scoop about the development of the RedCat Multiverse.
Greetings friends, aliens, and sentient shades of the color blue,
We've released some characters and had some AMAs, but I wanted to give you a little better idea of where we’re at with production of the RedCat Multiverse.
Our initial priorities have been determined by the development of a game trailer, so we can show more dynamically what the characters and head-to-head matches will look like. This also happens to be the best route towards a closed beta.
The Imaginaerium is just about done as an in-game 3D environment. We're working on camera moves and some visual effects, but it's already really cool. A mash-up, the environment has arcane, neon tech, alien, and fantasy elements, along with a multiversal gate. There are also levitating platforms for player avatars to oversee the matches, which is going to be a fun aspect to further develop.
We've got several awesome characters in full development.
His 3D model and texture are done, and we have several in-progress animations and early visual effects. The 2D render for the trailer looks pretty cool, though I'm not entirely sure on all the colors yet.
His 3D model and texture are done, and we're in early stages of animation and visual effects.
Her 3D model is complete and she's being textured now. We've seen some very nice early drafts of her 2D trailer render.
His 3D model is complete, even his tongue, but we still have a little texturing polish to do. We also have several in-progress animations and early visual effects. We've looked at some poses for his 2D render, and I've opted for maximum cuteness.
The King in Yellow
His 3D model and texturing are done, and we have several in-progress animations and early visual effects. His 2D render for the trailer looks really nice.
While we ended up swapping Maroc out of the trailer early on for Malia, we'd done some nice visual development before he was deprioritized. His 3D model is now done and he will be textured soon.
Here are several other important things which have been developed or are currently in development.
Mechanics for head-to-head matches are coded
Characters load into the game environment and can interact
The basic functionality of our UI is in-place and we’re adding some visual polish
The basic game lobby, wherein you choose your characters and in-game resources before a match, is functional
Game clients will connect to one another for head-to-head matches
Initial coding for handling disconnects has begun
In short, the game can be played in a very minimal way, but expands in functionality every week.
The First Universe, Eternal Forum, is in development
We are deep in development in our first universe, focused on critical thinking and sound judgment. Our recently licensed game narrative and branching conversation software has really helped us push forward and will help speed production. I just finished a player conversation with Socrates, which was both challenging and enjoyable. While the conversation seems like it’s fast, you can play it again and have a different or more in-depth one.
Here’s where we are with other “soft” developments.
All 104 characters are designed, and we can't wait to get in and playtest them
Art specs are complete for nearly all 104 characters
About a third of the VFX specs for character abilities are complete, with each character having four
The lore for 17 of the characters are completed, with more completed every week
The lore for 57 of the characters are in various states of completion
That’s All For Now
Until a time in the linear future, before we convert to metric hours, I have been,
